A: Chrome steel (GCr15/52100) is hard, high-load and low-cost—the most common bearing steel, but only moderately corrosion-resistant and needs preservative oil. Stainless (440C/304) resists corrosion and is washable for food, medical and wet duty, with slightly lower hardness and speed limit. Choose stainless for corrosive duty, chrome steel for heavy dry duty.
